Obesity Surgery
DedicationDakota Surgical is the only Sioux Falls surgical practice that is dedicated to treatment of the obese. We provide a multidisciplinary team approach to provide optimal care to the obese patient. All patients see our clinic's in house obesity dietician.
ExperienceDr. Frederick L. Harris, MS, MD, FACS is the region's most experienced gastric bypass surgeon. He is the only surgeon in the region to have experienced gastric bypass surgery himself. This gives him a unique perspective and insight into the surgical care of the obese.
Dr. Harris spent his residency training at Marshfield Clinic (the nation's third largest medical center) learning the treatment of obese patients under the supervision of Dr. Marvin Kuehner, one of the nation's pioneers of bariatric surgery. Since 1983, Dr. Harris has performed more than 900 obesity procedures as the attending physician. He meets the American Society for Bariatric Surgery's proposed criteria of fellow of the ASBS. This requires that a surgeon have five or more years experience in bariatric surgery, have performed more than 500 cases, have excellent outcomes, and have long term follow up with their patients.
FacilityDakota Surgical's clinic facilities have been designed to accommodate the morbidly obese, and patients with limited mobility. We are wheelchair accessible, even in a power outage. We have scales, furniture, tables, and exam equipment designed for the care of the morbidly obese.
Continuity of CareAt Dakota Surgical, both preoperative and perioperative care will be performed by the surgeon performing your case. This means that before your surgery and in the days following your surgery you will be seen by your surgeon, not by an associate who may not have extensive bariatric experience. Your surgeon will be a dedicated bariatric surgeon, not a Trauma surgeon who has been up all night and who occasionally dabbles in obesity surgery.
ResultsDakota Surgical has better outcomes, even on older and sicker patients. The charts below demonstrate the mortality rates, average length of stay, readmission rates, and complication rates.
